From the Director’s Desk

Dear SESO Families:

I would like to update you on recent changes that have taken place at our school.

Since late December 2011 our Bell system began to fall out of synchronization, causing confusion when it rang at the wrong time. The Administrative Team decided at our return from the Holidays to shut it off, until we could find a system to replace it. Please keep in mind that the Bell system has been in place close to 40 years, and its time is well overdue. Christian Rodriguez, IT person has been working on a computer based intercom system, which will have the add-on of the Bell system. In the meanwhile teacher synchronize their cell phones with the punch clock watch, and dismiss students from their classes, as is done in colleges and universities.

In November the Administration changes the “turn-on” time of the air conditioners to 9:30 AM

( you received a letter explaining the reasons); however, given the cooler morning temperatures, and the complaints of students that classrooms were “too cold,” and their constant use of jackets to keep warn, we moved the time up to 11:00 AM or when it got warmer during the day. Classrooms that have poor air circulation get them turned on earlier to avoid the stuffiness; however, some students would prefer them off. When temperatures merit the airs will be turned on for the comfort of the students.

Lastly, while we have faced many financial challenges, please be assured that we are not in a crisis. We are attempting to practice the concepts of a “Green School,” which is to be frugal, and contribute to improve the environment, as well as to take the measures everyone is taking in these challenging economic times.

Dear SESO Community:

As you may already know one of our teachers, Mrs. Rose Saavedra had to have brain surgery on January 17, 2012. We are very happy to inform that the surgery went well and she is now on a long but positive road towards recovery. However we are appealing to your generosity to assist Mrs. Saavedra’s family with the cost of the intervention which is considerable. The sign up sheets for the Parent/Teacher Meetings on February 10th have been put up at the school’s main lobby for teachers from grades 1-12. the sign up sheets for PK and K are available at the preschool building. Remember that there will be no classes on February 10th due to the parent/teacher meetings. Mrs. Elsie Vázquez, Mrs Mariam Quintana and Mrs. Delmarie Irizarry (3rd Grade Teachers) and Mir. Josué Rodríguez (8th grade Geography, 10th grade US History, 9-1 & 9-2 World History I) will not be available for meetings on Feb. 10th. If you need to meet with any of these teachers please contact the main office to make an appointment for an earlier or later date

Dear Parents:

It is very important that if your child is sick you keep him/her at home.If your child is out for more than 2 days we need for you to bring a written medical excuse (certification) indicating that the child can come back to school and that he/she has been under proper medical treatment. If your child presents any viral symptoms please leave him/her at home. If your child has been diagnosed with pink eye (conjunctivitis) or mononucleosis please do not bring him/her to scholl until treated and remeber to bring the proper medical certification.

A Friendly Reminder from the Nurse’s Office:

Parents with children who turned 4 and 11 years old during the holidays, please remember that your child needs to be vaccinated as soon as possible.

If you need a copy of your child’s vaccines sheet please feel free to come by my office and I will give you a copy.

I need all parents to be aware of the importance of having your child up to date in her/his immunizations.

Historia del Club de Oratoria de SESO

La Liga de Oratoria en Español de Puerto Rico es una organización sin fines de lucro que existe hace 40 años aproximadamente. Se organiza en cinco divisiones: A, B, C, D y E. El año pasado SESO entró por primera vez en la División E (2009-2010). Subimos a la D por la cantidad de puntos ganados y obtuvimos 7 premios.

Competencia anual 2010-2011: La competencia de la División D fue en la Academia del Perpetuo Socorro en Miramar el sábado, 19 de marzo de 2011. Obtuvimos el 2do lugar de escuelas y premios en todas las categorías. Subimos a la División C gracias a los logros obtenidos por el equipo: Hans Hess, Valerie Cora, Gabriela Rivera, Verónica Biaggi, Paloma Velasco, Andrea Caro, Andrea Medina, María Cristina Marrero, Paola Comas, Hilton Zapata, Melanie Pérez y Miguel Beauchamp. ¡Felicidades a todos!

SESO excel on the SAT

New Day For The Educator

School students Southwestern Educational Society (SESO) in Mayaguez, exceeded the test results of college entrance SAT-level Puerto Rico and matched the results achieved by young people in the United States.

The test provides the College Board that measures skills in critical reading, math and writing.

According to the director of the private institution, Lourdes Lugo, SESO scored a 1.508 on the SAT, while the number of private schools in Puerto Rico reported 1.370. The score achieved by schools in the United States was 1.509.

“These outstanding results demonstrate the commitment to SESO in offering the highest academic curricula for the development of competent and skilled students to succeed in his college career, and subsequently inserted to achieve effectively in the global economy of the XXI Century” Lugo said.

SESO two students who stood out for its performance in the SAT are Harry Sanabria and Luca Farsi. Both candidates have been selected as the Presidential Award along with some 3,000 candidates from the United States and Puerto Rico.

“In SESO appreciate the intellectual achievements of our students, their communication skills verbal and written both in English and Spanish. In addition, we implement methods and modern learning resources and flexible to take us build tomorrow’s leaders, “said Lugo.

Since its founding in 1973, SESO students have won prizes in various national and international competitions, among them: Spelling Bee, Science Fair and Technology, the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering & Environment Project Olympiad.

Currently the institution, accredited by the Middle States Association, holds its enrollment process for the next academic year.

National Honor Society

About National Honor Society

National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization devoted to acknowledging high school students who have excelled in four characteristics during their high school years. These four characteristics are Leadership, Service, Character, and Scholarship. NHS members make every effort to work for the betterment of their community.

Every high school that is part of NHS has its own set of rules and standards that are laid down by its advisors. In addition, each state that has schools that are part of NHS has a state board and state advisors. The job of the state advisors is to make sure that each school follows the national charter of the National Honor Society.

Any student who is a candidate for the Southwestern Educational Society of NHS must have attained an unweighted GPA of 3.33 in their sophomore or junior year. Secondly, they must exhibit outstanding leadership qualities, character, and service during their years in high school. Selection is a privilege not a right.

Once the student has become a member, they must retain their GPA and attend all NHS meetings as well as complete a service requirement during the school year.

SESO is part of this organization and is an honor, a recognition of our students achievements and a commitment to continue their excellence.
